Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
