At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
