Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Officers say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been placed in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Officers then discovered multiple other vandalized automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement say initial examinations show the substance was likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; investigators are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the event," they commented.

Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

A senior official commented the vandalism rendered him without words and had to be resolved quickly.

"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right violent incident in 2020," he posted on online, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
