"Our team contained an abundance of unbelievable talents," recalls former City teammate Ben Knight. "When you've got such a high number of world-class footballers, you just feel like you're never going to lose."

These five players have a crucial commonality: their pathway to Manchester City's first team was ultimately obstructed. "Having the City upbringing and then adding your own flair on it and playing with creative license has certainly benefited Cole," continued Knight. "He was the kind of player that required a bit of liberty to be at his best... At Chelsea as the main man; he can roam freely and get on the ball and do what he wants. The move has worked out."

The primary goal at Manchester City's academy is clear: to produce players for their own first team. To facilitate this, a distinct playing structure is used, mirroring the principles of Pep Guardiola's side to ensure a seamless progression. The development process frequently includes emulation of the established stars. "I attempted to copy Bernardo Silva, McAtee tried to copy David Silva," Knight explained. "The greatest challenge is they're £100m players and you're trying to usurp them—which is really hard. It's almost next to impossible."

His personal path nearly concluded early at City, with certain at the club questioning whether the then small 16-year-old possessed the necessary attributes. "He experienced a mad growth spurt," Knight noted. "And then Covid happened and he went with the first team and it was a case of: 'Oh my God, how good is he now? He's absolutely ridiculous.'"

Graduating as a Manchester City academy product holds a certain cachet, and the standard of player produced is consistently high. Smart recruitment and superb coaching ensure to keep City at the forefront and render them the admiration of rivals.
