Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
