More than forty-two million US residents are waiting with bated breath to learn if the Trump administration will use contingency money to supply billions of dollars in nutritional support.

Federal courts gave the White House until Monday noon Eastern Time (17:00 GMT) to give updates about how it intends to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly called food assistance.

Financial support for the program remains in limbo due to the more-than-month-long federal closure resulting from the inability of lawmakers to approve a budget agreement.

Despite the judges' ruling or other resolution, countless Americans have been deprived of essential nutrition support since funding for the program expired on Saturday.

State Administration and Government Money

While state governments manage the benefits, the programme depends on funds from the national administration, which has been unfunded and closed since 1 October.

Courts in two northeastern states determined that the US Department of Agriculture needs to use $5.25 billion (£4bn) in emergency funds to provide some funding to recipients on Snap.

Snap costs about eight billion dollars per month.

US President Donald Trump earlier stated he had instructed government lawyers to inquire with the judiciary how the government could lawfully finance food stamps, adding: "Although we get prompt direction, it will unfortunately be postponed."

Sunday, the Treasury Secretary said in a television appearance that the commander-in-chief wanted to hear from the courts about how to reallocate funds lawfully to fund assistance disbursements but they could be distributed as early as mid-week.

"A procedure exists that has to be followed," Bessent said. "So, we've got to determine what the method is."

Recently, the USDA said it will not distribute nutrition support money starting November 1st because of the government shutdown, saying: "Resources are exhausted."

Legal Actions and Local Reactions

Numerous states and the Washington DC sued the administration over the food-aid freeze and argued that they have a statutory duty to keep the program running in their areas.

Additionally, cities and charitable organizations also initiated legal action.

With uncertainty regarding federal Snap funding, several states said they would use their own money to fund food assistance.

The program serves a critical function enabling many economically disadvantaged citizens to buy groceries.

It provides them prepaid cards that they can use to purchase groceries.

A household with four members on average receives $715 monthly, which translates to a slightly under $6 per day, for each individual.
