Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
