Mount Mahameru Outburst in the Southeast Asian nation Prompts Evacuations

Indonesia's Mount Semeru, the highest peak on Java island, has exploded, blanketing several villages with volcanic ash, prompting evacuations and leading authorities to raise the warning to the highest level.

The volcano in the province of East Java unleashed blistering plumes of fiery ash and a mixture of stone, molten rock, and gases that moved up to 7km down its slopes multiple times from noon to evening, while a dense plume of fiery clouds rose 2km into the sky, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The eruptions that occurred throughout the day forced officials to increase the mountain's warning status on two occasions, from the level three to the top level, the agency said. No deaths or injuries have been announced.

Over three hundred inhabitants in the three communities most endangered in the district of Lumajang region were relocated to government shelters, according to a spokesperson for the national disaster mitigation agency.

He said that heightened volcanic movements of the mountain on Wednesday afternoon prompted officials to widen the hazard area to 5 miles from the summit. People were advised to keep away from an area along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the route of the molten rock stream, as searing gas flowed down the volcano's sides.

Footage on online platforms displayed a dense cloud of volcanic dust sweeping through a wooded ravine to a waterway beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces smeared with volcanic dust and rain, escaped to makeshift refuges or departed for alternative secure locations.

Regional news outlets reported that emergency teams were facing challenges to save about 178 people stranded on the 3,676-metre peak at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The group included 137 climbers, 15 carriers, seven escorts and six tourism officials, according to an official with the protected area.

“They are currently safe at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,” an official stated in a recorded message. He said the post was situated 2.8 miles from the crater on the north side of the mountain, which is not in the path of the hot cloud flow that was observed traveling to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and precipitation required the group to remain overnight there, he explained.

The volcano, also called Great Mountain, has erupted many occasions in the past 200 years. Still, as is the situation with many of the 129 live volcanoes in Indonesia, tens of thousands of people still to reside on its productive highlands.

Semeru’s previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 people were killed and several hundred more were injured and villages were submerged in thick mud. The event forced the evacuation of over ten thousand residents from their homes.

The country, an archipelago of more than 280 million people, sits along the Pacific seismic belt, a curved series of tectonic boundaries, and is susceptible to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
