The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with several in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
