It has been 30 years since the original Toy Story movie was released, establishing the animation giant as a leading film company and bringing viewers to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, providing a brief look into the plot but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

In the teaser reveals Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a brand new plaything, one that alarms the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer doesn't touch on is why Woody is back with his companions in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. The clip shows the badge pinned to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the toys.

Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
