The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed that parent company Unilever stopped the introduction of a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the business with his partner, revealed how he will personally create this new product as part of an individual series highlighting causes the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders versus Corporate Owner
The recent development intensifies the continuing tension among the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed how Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol for Support
Mr. Cohen revealed via social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder commented in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for Palestinians because of its coloration, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally established in 2016 to support former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the principles which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
