Two Separate Cuba-Destined Relief Sailboats Reported Missing after Departing the Coast of Mexico.

A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is actively under way in the Caribbean region for a pair of unlocated sailing vessels transporting humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Military Rescue Missions Launched

Mexico has deployed navy personnel and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were had on board no fewer than 9 crew members, according to a military release.

The ships had been expected to reach the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their docking, authorities reported.

Context of Aid to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation grapples with multiple power outages across the country.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable safety equipment and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort said.

The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.

"We are co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Earlier Humanitarian Delivery

Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and officially received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the island.

That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the vessel in which Castro returned to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Wider Geopolitical Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of attempts to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation came into effect.

Global bodies have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba amid power shortages.

Diplomatic tensions have increased over the past months, with statements from several officials emphasizing the complicated situation regarding relations.

Responding to recent comments, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Accounts suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.

The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its command to find the boats and ensure the safety of the sailors.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
